Albert Marcœur (avant-prog, chamber)

French multi-instrumentalist/composer, was born on December 12 1947, in Dijon, France. During his formal education of clarinet at the National Academy of Music and Dance of Dijon, Marcoeur actively participated in many straightforward college rock 'n roll bands. Closing an end to his formal training Marcoeur's musical visions had gravitated towards the experimental facets of music, wishing "to do nothing else but make my own music".
In 1970, the realisations of Marcoeur's 'unclassifiable' forays found their conception, marking the being of studio life. It was to be another four years until the release of his first self-titled album, which still ranks as his greatest recording to date. Loosely classified as proto-RIO chamber-rock, the album lays down several RIO foundations [much like Robert Wyatt's, "The End of an Ear"], later to be picked up by the likes of Aksak Maboul. As with all great albums, controversy was only a step around the corner, with a helping hand of an unauthorised 'loan', the albums closing bars containing "two two-note chords that I had found on a jazz classics album".
While embracing the 'avant-garde' in the true sense on of the word, Marcoeur's compositions took a tight but balanced approach, giving even the most absurd noises a homely feel. Smitten with humour, Marcoeur has more than once been hailed the French reply to Zappa [though less prolific]. Historically his influence cannot be denied, producing another three albums of high calibre, before wandering off into more clichéd avenues.

Art Moulu (avant-prog, RIO)

ART MOULU TREFIN was formed in Grenoble, France in 1983, later they shortened their name to ART MOULU. The leader of the band was sax player Olivier Masson. At the time the band was made up of Masson on sax, Jean Francois Welter on drums, Maurice Ott on vocals, and Luc Felman and Richard Antez on percussion. Between their inception and 1988, the band gave several concerts in Grenoble and Switzerland. In 1985 the band recorded their first tape and in May of that same year they played at the Festival Hors Gabarit in Neuchatel. Still under the name ART MOULU TREFIN, in 1986 they released the track C'est bon la viande! on the Re Records Quarterly Vol.1 No.4 compilation, and in 1987 the track Ayayaie Moment was featured on the Douze Pour Un Vol. 2 compilation LP released by the Ayaa Records label. In 1989 ex ETRON FOU LELOUBLAN keyboard player Jo Thirion joined the band, and in 1990 they released their only, eponymous CD on the Italian label Osto Records. The disk folows very much in the same R.I.O. vein as EFL in terms of both sound and spirit. Chris Cutler later re-released the CD on his ReR Records label.

16-17 (jazz core, experimental, punk jazz, noise)

Alex Buess - Saxophone
Knut Remond - Drums
Markus Kneubühler - Guitar/Noise

Founded by saxophonist Alex Buess and drummer Knut Remond, the industrial, free jazz, and noise outfit 16-17 were formed in Basel, Switzerland, in 1983. Subsequently joined by guitarist and electronics-wielder Markus Kneubühler, they recorded and released their first EP, the five-song Hardkore & Buffbunker, in 1984. Originally issued on cassette only, the raw-sounding Hardkore & Buffbunker offered a blunt introduction to their sound, featuring Buess' relentlessly abrasive alto saxophone (along with some occasional shouted vocals) atop the insistent drumming of Remond and the distorted, repetitive guitar work of Kneubühler (who approached his instrument more like a bass than a standard guitar). They returned three years later with their first vinyl release, an eponymous seven-song effort that was distributed by the Swiss RecRec imprint. The abrasive sound and unrelenting approach marked a continuation of what they had begun with Hardkore & Buffbunker, though the recording fidelity is slightly less raw. When All Else Fails -- another low-tech live-recording -- followed in 1989 and continued in the vein of the previous releases.
16-17's first full-fledged studio album did not come until 1994. The album, Gyatso (Pathological), marked a change in their sound. Produced by Kevin Martin (Ice, Techno Animal), Gyatso also features G.C. Green (Godflesh) on bass. Rather than trying to reproduce their live sound, the band embraced the possibilities of the studio, employing overdubs, borderline psychedelic stereo effects, and a low end worthy of the heaviest of dub productions. Even so, the album is just as (if not more) intense and abrasive as the (mostly live) recordings that preceded it, and it still stands as their finest moment.
Following Gyatso, the group underwent a couple of lineup changes, with Remond being replaced on drums by Michael Wertmüller (Peter Brötzmann) and Damian Bennett (Deathless, Techno Animal) being brought on as their first full-time bassist. This lineup recorded the Human Distortion EP, which appeared in 1998 on Alec Empire's Digital Hardcore label and sounded like the work of a completely different band. Things went quiet for 16-17 in the years that followed, though most of their recordings (everything except Human Distortion) eventually wound being reissued in the late 2000s after being difficult to find for many years. These reissues, both on the Florida-based Savage Land label, consisted of a remastered version of Gyatso as well as a two-CD package entitled When All Else Fails (which actually includes the original album by that name as well as the entire contents of Hardkore & Buffbunker and 16-17). While 16-17's music is perhaps not quite as shocking now as it must have been when the group first began -- thanks in part to groups like Painkiller, Last Exit, and the Flying Luttenbachers, who have since explored similar mixtures of searing noise and free jazz-inspired improvisation -- it remains challenging and far outside the mainstream.

1870 (Mil Ochocientos Setenta)

Founded in 2006 and based in the city of Queretaro, in the centre of Mexico, 1870 (or MIL OCHOCIENTOS SETENTA) is a one of a kind proposal where chamber music meets improvisation, delivering a complex yet unconventional state-of-the-art sound. All members are well known musicians who have participated in different symphonic and chamber orchestras in Mexico, currently being permanent members of the Queretaro Philharmonic Orchestra. Al compositions comprised in the band's debut release "Mitos de una Resurrección" (november of 2008) are inspired by the groundbreaking poetry of Isidore Lucie Ducasse, a.k.a. Count of Lautreamont: the repertoire is set to describe the poet's state of consciousness which leads to the creation of dark, anguished atmospheres.

The band's sound is intimately linked to groups like UNIVERS ZERO and ART ZOYD (both early eras), as well as the compatriot RIO precursor band NAZCA. The use of digitally processed backgrounds and minimalistic atmospheres bring connections to old-school electronic krautrock and the tradition of musique concrete, not unlike compatriot electronic avantgardists such as OXOMAXOMA and ALQUIMIA.

1870 is recommended to all avant-prog lovers, especially those who are particularly receptive of new, emerging ways of continuing the legacy of old-school RIO and chamber-rock.

A big thank you to Juan José Salas of Luna Negra for the main info.

Bise De Buse (avant-chamber, chamber-jazz)

Born in Strasbourg's university way back in 75, from the association of friends following musicology courses, the group was often a trio (pianist Spielmann, drummer Malka & bassist/guitarist Dosdat), sometimes joined by sax player Michel, to play informally contemporary music, rock and traditional musics. It would be a few years before the group found its musical orientations and evolved into a quintet (adding bassist Heitz), then in 1980 adding cellist Bataillon. But the group had to cut back and only a trio recorded the eight tracks of the album, which was acoustic chamber rock music. With Bataillon offered a job across the country, the group disbanded almost immediately, but reformed under the moniker Triple Buse (triple airhead) than later under Biz'Art.

So BdB never released an album per se, but the Musea release is a compilation of the recorded album (recorded as a trio of piano, sax and cello) with Gong's Didier Malherbe on two tracks, and various tapes from various eras (including the group as a quintet), most of them in 79, when the group was highly influenced by the Canterbury scene.

Barricade (RIO, avant-prog)

BARRICADE, already known as the roots of ZNR, were a radical French commune formed in 1969 by over thirty musicians / non-musicians around François BILLARD (saxophone, voices, harmonica) and Gérard LAPEYRE (violin) in Marseilles. They had wandered from place to place, changed their members one after another, and gigged on various stages in France around 1970.

In 1973, they were split into two Barricades - one is a radically political & anarchic music outfit around François named Barricade Crève-Vite-Charogne (aka BARRICADE CVC), and another a musically experimental project called BARRICADE II around Roquet Belles OREILLES (called Hector ZAZOU later) and Joseph RACAILLE. The two Barricades had refused any record release throughout their active period in any cases (although Virgin Records had tried to persuade BARRICADE II to release albums and to go on a tour in England).

BARRICADE CVC were disbanded in 1973, and also BARRICADE II in the following year, when almost all of their material might be destroyed. Hector and Joseph formed chamber-rock unit ZNR later.

Finally in 2005, a French avant-jazz label Futura Records could release a compilation CD "Le Rire Des Camisoles 1969-1974" with their session & live material in those days by permission.
